Singled Out: Vinyl Illustration

I was 16 when I first listened and watched Massive Attack's "Teardrop" video. Part of the lyrics, "feathers on my breath", may have been inspired from a poem by Hildegard von Bingen, an early 12th-century female theologist, poet, herbalist, and composer. She wrote: "Listen: there was once a king sitting on his throne. Around him stood great and wonderfully beautiful columns ornamented with ivory, bearing the banners of the king with great honor. Then it pleased the king to raise a small feather from the ground, and he commanded it to fly. The feather flew, not because of anything in itself but because the air bore it along. Thus am I, a feather on the breath of God." My representation of this song and the video drawn on the vinyl records, is my take from the paragraph of how we are no different at the moment of conception till the day we die in this circle of life, that we move and love not in the will of others or kings but of God and perhaps other natural forces. I used the hamsa and cross together to represent different beliefs but both are submitting themselves to their own gods, or one, we never know.

ATTAGIRL!: Championing electronic music for women in Southeast Asia

ATTAGIRL! is a DJ/Event collective established in 2013 as a passion project with the aim of providing a platform for females in music and art and to empower them in an open and accessible community through curated events and initiatives.

As a love project, ATTAGIRL! gave me many ways to explore illustration for posters and merchandise. This illustration was done for our 4th anniversary, and is a tribute to the women in punk music which I love.
